Three fences, drawn to scale.

Start with what the fence is for. Closing off a back yard, looking good from both sides, or marking a friendly front yard. The right style usually follows.

Have something else in mind? Privacy, shadowbox and picket are what you see here, but they aren't the only fences we build. Ask about any fence type.

Which side faces out?

It's the question that comes up on almost every fence line between two yards. Here's the difference in two photos.

Privacy: one finished face

Boards go on one side of the rails. One side is smooth, the other shows posts and rails, like this. We'll talk through which way it faces before we build.

Shadowbox: finished both ways

Boards alternate on both sides of the rails with small gaps between, so it looks the same from your yard and your neighbor's, and a little air moves through. More on shadowbox

Fence questions

Which fence style should I pick?
Start with what the fence is for. A privacy fence closes off the view with solid boards. A shadowbox fence has boards on both sides of the rails, so it looks finished from your yard and your neighbor's. A picket fence is low and open, for front yards and gardens.
Does the finished side of the fence face me or my neighbor?
A privacy fence has one finished side and one side where the posts and rails show. Many people face the finished side out toward the neighbor or the street, and some HOAs have a rule about it. A shadowbox fence looks the same from both sides.
